Ghost of Yotei: How to Remove Horse Camera Black Bars

Every time Atsu rides her horse in Ghost of Yotei, two black bars appear on the top and bottom of the screen, adding a film-like filter to the view. In addition, the camera zooms out, showing a wide area around the horse to help players navigate easily.

This alternate horse camera setting is not to everyone’s liking, and some players may be interested in finding out how they can remove the black letterbox bars from their screen. Luckily, the process is very simple. Here’s what you need to do.

How to Remove Horse Camera Letterbox in Ghost of Yotei

Horse Camera Letterbox Effect Toggle

Press R3 (right stick) on your PlayStation 5 controller to disable the black bars that appear when riding a horse in Ghost of Yotei. Doing so while mounted on your steed will make the game smoothly retract the black borders.

Press R3 again to cycle between the other camera settings (detailed below).

Ghost of Yotei’s photo mode automatically removes the horse camera black bars when turned on.

Horse Camera Modes

There are three horse camera settings in Ghost of Yotei:

  • Letterbox + Zoom out: Two black bars appear on the top and bottom of the screen, and the camera is zoomed out all the way.
  • Zoom out: The camera is zoomed out all the way, but the letterbox black bars disappear.
  • Zoom in: The camera is zoomed in quite a bit, and the black bars are removed. Zoom levels are similar to how they are when Atsu is off her horse in normal gameplay settings.

You can toggle between these three settings by pressing R3 (right stick) on your PlayStation 5 DualSense Controller while mounted on Atsu’s horse, choosing any that suits your preference.

You cannot have the letterbox effect when the camera is zoomed in.

Whichever you choose, the game will remember your decision. The next time you mount your horse, it will have the preset that you selected previously.

In addition to the alternate horse view, Ghost of Yotei offers three cinematic modes that can drastically change the experience. These modes can be toggled on and off at any point during a playthrough. Try them out if you’re interested in changing things up.

How to Fix Horse Running Away Bug in Ghost of Yotei

Hard saving and reloading fixes the horse running away bug in Ghost of Yotei. Loading from an earlier save works as well, but you’ll likely lose progress that way if the game hasn’t auto-saved recently.

It’s unclear what the trigger for this bug is. When it happens, it makes it so that when you whistle, the horse runs away from Atsu instead of slowing down when it nears her. Exiting to the main menu and loading up a save resets the game world, fixing the bug in the process.
